Job Description: 

The Justice Education Society (JES) has a career opportunity for a full-time Public Legal Educator for our Indigenous Program. Working out of the Vancouver head office 34 hours per week, the candidate will support the delivery the Justice System Education Program for Indigenous Peoples (JSEP-IP).

The purpose of this program is to provide culturally sensitive public legal education outreach to Indigenous youth throughout BC, as well as to provide instructional workshops to Band members, Elders, community service workers, teachers and others. This position requires familiarity with Indigenous justice issues, as well as extensive travel, as it is a legal education outreach program.

The Public Legal Educator will draw on existing JES contacts and their personal network of contacts in BC’s Indigenous community. Legal education workshops and presentations will be coordinated, delivered and evaluated, ensuring that JES responds to the needs of program participants, while helping to improve their legal capability.

Skills and Qualities Required: 

• Proven ability to coordinate and deliver education presentations to youth
• Two years’ experience as an educator of high school students and/or Indigenous youth
• Familiarity with the impact of political and justice system decisions on Indigenous Peoples
• Familiarity with the BC justice system, especially courts and legal procedures
• Desire to provide legal education to youth and community members
• Demonstrated experience organizing events, communicating with stakeholders and positively engaging with the community
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong time management skills and professionalism
• Ability to travel, including over-night travel to communities across BC
• A valid driver’s license is required
• Proficient in the use of common business applications: MS-Office, email, internet

Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Plan, organize and deliver justice system educational programs
• Facilitate educational sessions to students and community groups across BC
• Support the First Peoples Principles of Learning
• Conduct professional development sessions with teachers, Elders, etc.
• Monitor participation and engagement in the program
• Work with the PLE Team Lead and program management to ensure program deliverables are met
• Promote JES educational resources
