Job Description: 

We are seeking a Communications Assistant for the Carnegie Community Action Project (CCAP), a project of the board of the Carnegie Community Centre Association. CCAP works on housing, income, and land use issues in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) of Vancouver so that the area can remain a low-income friendly community. CCAP works with English speaking and Chinese
speaking DTES residents in speaking out on their own behalf for the changes they would like to see in their neighbourhood.

Through digital engagement, communications, research and online outreach, the Communications Assistant will further CCAP’s community vision for land use, planning, and housing in the Downtown Eastside and the meaningful engagement of local residents in community planning processes.

This is an ideal position for a youth wishing to further their digital engagement and communications skills and experience while challenging their knowledge and understanding of social housing, development, city processes, social impact and working with a diverse population.

Skills and Qualities Required: 

Strong written, verbal and digital communications skills
Interest in social justice issues including housing, homelessness and income
Graphic design skills an asset
Ability to work well with a diverse population experiencing poverty, homelessness, intergenerational discrimination and colonization, and mental and physical disability
Ability to research and analyze information and data
Understanding of harm reduction, colonization and anti-oppression principles an asset
Written or verbal Chinese language an asset

Duties and Responsibilities: 

Digital engagement

Update and post on social media platforms
Post website updates and online newsletters
Help prepare newsletters, announcements and community bulletins
Write newsletter articles, statements, letters and news releases as required
Develop and update media lists

Research and Design

Assist with data collection, surveys, compiling and analyzing results
Research and track actions of city hall, province and federal governments related to poverty, housing, gentrification and homelessness
Assist with producing CCAP’s annual hotel and housing report and other reports that CCAP undertakes
Design and layout posters, flyers, outreach materials, and newsletters


Attend weekly CCAP volunteer meetings and meetings with community partners when possible
Work with staff and volunteers to organize and plan campaign outreach and promotion through digital tools
Participate in training and educational opportunities with CCAP members when possible
Computer troubleshooting where possible
