Ontario government forces Waterloo region to make heartbreaking budget cuts

Last year, Waterloo Region's cost-shared spending with the province was cut to $2.5 million from $6 million the year before, a 58-per-cent cut. Politicians agreed to prop up the program temporarily with an additional $2 million in municipal funds, but that still meant some dramatic cuts of $1.5 million.

For this year, even more cuts are expected as the region tries to keep tax increases reasonable. Emergency food hampers could be curtailed. So could bus tickets, orthotics, and "eviction prevention" measures, which offers help paying rent arrears so that a person isn't left homeless.
