Reconciliation Week launches in Vancouver

Reconciliation Week

Yesterday was the official launch of Reconciliation Week in Vancouver, a series of events being held in conjunction with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Events are being held at the PNE until Saturday, September 21 and there is a 4km Reconciliation Walk on Sunday with a keynote speech by Dr, Martin Luther King's daughter, Dr. Bernice A. King.

Organizers see Reconciliation Week as a time for residential school survivors to share their stories, to educate non-Aboriginal people about the history and legacy of residential schools and to celebrate the survival and struggles of Aboriginal people. Though some activists are questioning why the week is sponsored by Kinder Morgan and TransCanada, two energy companies that have faced opposition from Aboriginal people for trying to build pipelines through First Nation's land.
