NWT Premier commits to developing a poverty strategy

Earlier this month, the premier of the Northwest Territories made commitments toward developing an NWT anti-poverty strategy. See the Premier's statement and the results of the territory-wide consultation about poverty from last spring where they spoke to two-hundred-and-fifty people including residents, front line workers and clients, students, elders, businesses and non-governmental organizations, as well as community and Aboriginal leaders.

The report says that people told the government to make wellness, education, housing, job creation, economic development and transitional programs a priority. People also said better communication and coordination of programs is needed along with more collaboration among agencies.
